Amster: Shall we wall in the entire nation?

Great column by Randall today -- erudite, well reasoned, well written, passionate and persuasive. Just go read.

It saddened me to read so many negative comments about the professor's article. I have no problem with disagreement. But many of the comments in the Courier show how intolerant people are to different perspectives. It has become a world of black and white thinking, where some want to imprison or fire those who disagree with them. Illegal immigration is a problem. But what has been revealed is an irrational response of xenophobia, hatred, and scapegoating. I thought we could solve our problems rationally, but I was wrong.

I don't think it's warranted to extrapolate much from the Courier comments. The people who truly inhabit that black-and-white world are no more than 20% of the population, and those who will speak up in public, even anonymously, are a small subset of that. Remember that nearly half the voters reliably vote against this stuff.

Most of our population is adults. They're just not always in charge.
