City on clean-up: Crickets

Joanna interviewed the hapless manager who'll be taking the fall for the City's poor response to the snow, but where are the quotes from Council and the city manager? The line employees can tell us what they're doing, but only the elected officials can tell us whether they're satisfied with the results. Why isn't the Courier stepping up to demand answers to the hard questions?

When was the last time you saw the Courier step up to demand answers to hard questions from ANYONE? Really, I can’t remember. I’d say that the town watchdog has lost its sight, its hearing and its teeth, and is slumbering on the porch, but that’s just too cute. The fact is, the Courier has long-since abandoned that role. The only source of meaningful criticism comes from the online readers (fruit loops and all), which is why there’s so much focus now on getting that under control. No other media outlet will pick up the flag, which says a lot (and I’ll leave it there).

Kelly has a nearly empty canvas in front of her. It’ll be interesting to see if she’s a journalist at heart, or if she chooses instead to continue with PNI’s focus on the ancillary businesses, while the Courier becomes a glorified Thrifty Nickel.
