A1: "Supervisors OK $248.9 million budget"

I can't really blame Paula Rhoden for trying to squeeze this information into the form her editor wants, it should have been designed better. We wind up trying to read a spreadsheet without the gridlines, with bits about the actual effects that matter to voters sprinkled among the wreckage. Ack.

    My experience with fellow journalists is that many have problems with numbers. Thus they can't put together a good table or spreadsheet to convey twice the info as a textual "analysis" tries to do. That's why they are such suckers for big percentages based on small occurances.

If, on the other hand, you're willing to stand by your convictions and post under your own name or a regular handle, your comments belong to you, and I'll edit them only on egregious violations of respect for others.
