Editorial: "Authorities are to 'protect and serve'"

That's what I'm talkin' about. The unnamed Courier editor gets a cookie. Police officers who act like frat yobbos should be taken out and, I don't know, have their heads shaved or something.

  1. Cops in this area are taking a hit. Wow, the dog attacks in PV, the Aryan deputy, now this. Who's hiring these people and where's the oversight? Not sure if this works this way, but in the case of the county deputies, does the county HR have anything to do with that? If so, then the BOS just approved for the former head of county HR to be the new county administrator. If there is something there, then whoops. jared

This sort of hazing is common among organizations that involve primarily young men, but I take your overall point, that it seems like the quality of the recruits is falling.

There may be other factors, given the economic choices available to the good ones and the overall manpower shortage created by Bush's adventurism. The police agencies may just have to take what they can get, for the most part.

I encourage you to share your own views and experience with me and other readers. How you do that matters, and I'm committed to maintaining a place where readers and commenters can feel safe from adolescent BS. So here's the deal:

There are two kinds of anonymous comments: those by people who have a genuine fear of revenge from the dark side, and those from darksiders just hiding to avoid accountability. You may post comments anonymously, but I reserve the right to treat anonymous comments as found items that belong to me and do with them as I see fit.

If, on the other hand, you're willing to stand by your convictions and post under your own name or a regular handle, your comments belong to you, and I'll edit them only on egregious violations of respect for others.

If this doesn't work for you, I'm sure you'll be happier somewhere else.
