Offline today

I'll be leaving fairly early for our gig at the Chandler Jazz Festival, so if you don't get a reply to your comment, it's not that I don't love you, I'm working and I'll get to it tomorrow. Have a great Friday!

    I notice the Courier is alone today among media NOT reporting the latest in the federal justice department investigation into Rick Renzi's activities.

    Catalyst, I apologize for sounding like a smartass, but that is simply not true.
    I posted this story as soon as I saw it, which was at 8:05 a.m. (I was busy doing nonstop work from 5:15 a.m. until then)
    I put it at the very top of our Web site because of its obvious importance.
    We didn't have it in our print product because the story broke on the wire after our A-section deadline on Thursday night.

    I think the Courier is like most newspapers. They go to press around midnight and with several sections each has a deadline. I would not be surprised if their A-section deadline is 8 or 9 p.m. The Renzi story did not hit the news until after that -- mostly this morning. That's so they can print it and then insert and distribute it.

    Mason, the story broke in Washington at 7 p.m., Arizona time. It was on the Arizona AP wire at 9 p.m. Channel 12 News in Phoenix had a lengthy story at 10 p.m.

    Catalyst is right, you're behind the times John But .... Im pretty sure John was not trying to hide this story ..It would be like trying to hide a elephant under a hamburger Bun..on a different note Gee its fun watching all these law and order republicans scurrying around trying to not get busted .

    Now, I've got to stand up for John here. Besides his other duties, he's PNI's cyber-guy. He can turn on a dime and post a late-breaking story.

    The dead tree version of the Daily Courier doesn't have that nimbleness, either logisticallyor, I'm sure, editorially - since print is still the critical mouthpiece for the company.

    Glad to see you posting here, John.

    A healthy dialogue between the Fourth and Fifth Estates can only make for more intersting reading.

    Our dead-tree product deadline is 9:30/10 p.m., but on a Thursday, we often push it right until/through then, as the Friday's paper one of the largest ones of the week.

    catalyst says the story broke in Washington at 7 p.m., Arizona time. A search of Associated Press online, which the Courier depends on for news outside of Yavapai County, shows the first hint of this was a 200-word story that moved at 7:34 p.m. az time. With their deadlines that would have been the most they could have printed. Broadcast rips and reads. Print has to have more substance. The next story to move was at 11:05 p.m. az time, past their deadline.

    Check out Saturday's Courier. Nice to see the placement of the Renzi story, top of page 1. Gotta wonder what Renzi is thinking. It's like Bush with this Gonzales thing. Click, flash, click, flash goes the career expiration light.
